Your cat and Christmas decorations

Hello cat lovers,

here at Longcroft our elves are busy decorating and preparing wonderful Christmas surprises for all those lucky enough to spend Christmas at Longcroft!

Have you put all of your decorations up already? What does your cat think of them? We hope that your cat and Christmas decorations in the house are not a recipe for disaster…

Here are a few tips from us:

If you can’t put your Christmas tree in a room that your cat can’t get into, try to set it up as safely as possible! Put your tree on a sturdy base, so that it can’t topple over. Fake trees are actually safer than real trees, as pine needles are poisonous for your cat and can puncture your cat’s internal organs if ingested. Make sure your cat doesn’t drink water from the base of the tree, as this can be poisonous for her, too!

Keep ornaments and tinsel out of your cat’s reach – tinsel, if ingested, can lead to internal blockages and ornaments can shatter and cut your cat’s paws.

Switch electric lights off when you’re not around and make sure your cat cannot get close to any real lit candles.

Pine, as well as holly, poinsettias and mistletoe are poisonous. Keep them out of your cat’s reach.

We are sure your cat loves to play with ribbons and wrapping paper. Just make sure that you don’t leave him unsupervised so that he can’t eat any of it or strangle himself.

Please do not feed your cat any human treats – chocolate, sweets or even scraps off the Christmas dinner table. Most of our human indulgences will upset your cat’s stomach, and chocolate is toxic! If you want to give your cat a special Christmas treat, why not  let her indulge in some cooked prawns or buy a festive treat designed especially for cats?

What do we think of kittens as gifts?

Kittens can be a wonderful Christmas gift – if the recipient knows about this beforehand and you know that they will be responsible pet owners! Kittens, or other animals, should never be given as a surprise gift. We all know that a pet is for life and not just for Christmas!

We hope you and your cat enjoy the run up to Christmas as much as we do!
